The University of Sharjah invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research for the academic year 2010-2011. Applicants who meet the criteria listed below are invited to apply immediately. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will commence duties on July 1, 2010.

The University of Sharjah is a non-profit independent institution with a total enrollment of (9000) students (480 graduate students) and (540) full-time faculty members. The colleges of the University are Shari’a and Islamic Studies, Arts Humanities and Social Sciences, Business and Management, Engineering, Health Sciences, Law, Communication, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Fine Arts and Design, the Community College and the College of Graduate Studies and Research. The main University campus is located within 30 minutes drive from Dubai International Airport and 10 minutes from Sharjah International Airport.

The College of Graduate Studies and  Scientific Research includes the departments of Graduate Studies, Research Groups and Activities, Office of Research Grants, Scientific publishing, as well as several units including Scientific Activities and Programs, Undergraduate Research and University of Sharjah Journals. The College supervises and coordinates 13 Master’s degree programs in Fiqh (Jurisprudence) and its Foundations, Exegesis and Hadith, Arabic Language and Literature, History and Islamic Studies, English Language (Translation), Computer Science, Executive MBA, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Private Law, Public Law and Communication. The University is also planning to offer Ph.D programs in the near future in the fields of molecular medicine, engineering management, international law, Islamic laws and studies, and history of Islamic Civilization.  Scope of Work:

The Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research reports directly to the Chancellor and administers and coordinates all research and graduate studies activities of the University, develops, in coordination with the university colleges strategic directions and plans for the College, and integrates College activities within the environment of the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is required to undertake:

1.     Planning: including the elaboration of the College of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research’s vision, and the ongoing development and implementation of a comprehensive college plan.

2.     Graduate programs management: management and promotion of all graduate programs in the University.

3.     University Research: promote and facilitate research and scholarly activities among all faculty members of the University.

4.     Budget management: including budget proposals, budget analysis and achievement of college objectives within the approved college budget.

5.     Human resources management: maintenance of a work environment in the college in which innovative ideas and developments may flourish, and are encouraged and rewarded.

6.     University planning: high-level contribution to university-wide planning and policy development, through the Deans Council and the Chancellor, and chairing/leading university-wide committees and associated strategic activities.

7.     Legal compliance and accountability: ensures that the college is aligned with all relevant legislation and university policies.

8.     Relationship liaison and development: fostering and maintaining strategic partnership and alliances locally and internationally, and the development of effective working relationships with partners to continue to enhance the college reputation in graduate studies and research. Coordinating agreements with government ministries, relevant authorities and agencies in the United Arab Emirates and abroad.

9.     Academic accreditation: Manage relations with local academic bodies and other organizations as well as international accreditation organizations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The applicant must:

-         Be a Full Professor in one of the University fields at a reputable University.

-         Have full command of spoken and written Arabic and English languages.

-         Have demonstrable qualities of leadership and a research background in his field.

-         Have a clear vision for the development of higher education in general and the College in particular.

-         Have working experience in academic institutions that use the credit hour system.

-         Be familiar with accreditation standards.

-         Have occupied a significant administrative experience preferably at the level of dean or department chair at a reputable university.
