Director of the English Language Center
The University of Sharjah is currently advertising for the position of Director of the English Language Center. The position will commence at the start of the academic year 2010/2011. Applicants who meet the criteria listed below are invited to apply immediately.
The University of Sharjah is a non-profit independent institution with a total enrollment of 9,500 students and 450 full-time faculty members. The University offers diverse programs in a variety of specializations through its colleges of Sharia and Islamic Studies, Sciences, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Health Sciences, Law, Fine Arts and Design, Communication, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, the Community College, and College of Graduate Studies and Research. The University is located within the prestigious Sharjah University City surrounded by scenic desert environs, near several coastal locations, and is just a 20-minute drive from the Dubai International Airport and a five-minute drive from the Sharjah International Airport.
The Post
The Director of the English Language Center reports directly to the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and leads a team of approximately 50 full-time faculty members teaching in the University’s intensive English language Program. This is a pre-university program dedicated to supporting the development of students’ proficiency in English until they are able to attain a level equivalent to TOFEL 500 or IELTS Band 5. Students across all IEP programs average in numbers around 1,000.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Supervising and evaluating both the IEP teaching team and the IEP support team across the four campuses (men’s, women’s, Khorfakkan and Community College).
• Overseeing all program-related activities, assessment, curriculum development, and committee constituencies.
• Planning and managing the Center’s budget and maintaining a productive and collegial atmosphere.
• Responding to internal matters and issues arising from Higher Administration.
• Recruiting, interviewing and recommending new faculty members.
• Meeting with the faculty on a regular basis and formulating policy recommendations based upon faculty consensus.
• Performing community outreach and organizing the administration of TOEFL and IELTS exams.
Job Qualifications
Candidates for this position are expected to have a PhD in TESOL or a closely related field, a recognized TESOL teaching qualification, significant experience in managing a large and diverse faculty and in effectively coordinating with academic units across an institution of higher education, teaching and management experience in an intensive pre-university English language program, evidence of excellent communication skills, native-like use of English, flexibility and versatility, awareness of and sensitivity to linguistic and cultural diversity, active interest in professional development, and the ability to work on one’s own initiative. Working knowledge of Arabic is considered highly desirable.
